Be the best prepared you can be
The Black Belt Academy program is a 14 week intensive program for ITFNZ members on Sunday afternoons run twice per year in the lead up to the June and December gradings - one for 1st gups and another for those who are already 1st dan and above.
The program is taught and overseen by Master Mahesh Bhana, 8th Dan & Senior Examiner, together with specialists from the region.
During the program you will get to work with other students from around the region who are working toward their next dan - the very people you will be partnering with and supporting during the black belt grading weekend.

FAQ's
Is the Academy a "one stop shop" for my black belt preparation?
The Academy program integrates with your personal and club preparation. It is not intended to replace either of those things, rather to complement them. Can you guarantee I will be ready for my black belt after completing the program? Your readiness depends on your willingness to put in the work outside of the Academy training. We can only help you prepare, you have to do the work. Can I just attend one-off sessions in the syllabus areas I really need to work on? To get the best value out of the Academy program and to be able to attend the simulated grading you need to attend all the sessions. Apart from the added benefit to you, students who have trained together in the Academy program find having trained together with other candidates during the Academy program makes their grading weekend less daunting with familiar faces. |
Testimonials
I strongly encourage all my red belt and black belt students to enrol in the Black Belt Academy. It offers a comprehensive understanding of the black belt grading syllabus, coupled with expert evaluations to determine students' readiness for grading. I believe it's a valuable opportunity for individuals in the Auckland Region to refine their skills and undergo a thorough assessment before pursuing their next belt.

Joining the academy has been a transformative experience for our students aspiring to achieve 1st Degree black belt or higher. With comprehensive coverage of the entire syllabus and specialist instructors, the academy ensures that every aspect of martial arts is thoroughly explored. The camaraderie fostered by training alongside peers who share the same goal creates a supportive and motivating environment. Not only does the academy provide exceptional value, but it also offers a unique opportunity to train and grow with others who are on the same grading journey.

Whilst we do our best to prepare our students for their black belt grading, there are some things we simply cannot replicate within our class environment that can do justice to what they will encounter at grading. Black Belt Academy bridges the gap between the club training and black belt grading, and supports students to get to that next level of readiness. Black Belt Academy offers expert tutelage across all aspects of the syllabus, ongoing individual feedback, and grading tips. It also gives students the experience of training with a large group of the same rank, and working with others that they may have never trained with before. This is super important given they will be grading together, and may be partnered for step sparring, self defense, bag work, etc. Every black belt at our club attended Black Belt Academy, and I would thoroughly recommend it to all potential candidates.
